Due to teacher illness this week, the students watched parts one and two of a PBS documentary on ancient Greece. The documentary, The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization, was helpful to the students, as it served as review for much of the material that has been covered thus far in the unit. Part one is structured around the life and accomplishments of the political reformer Cleisthenes (c. 570-508 BC), known for being the father of Athenian democracy. Part two is structured around the life and accomplishments of the politician and naval commander Themistocles (c. 524-459 BC), known for his maritime victory at Salamis during the Greco-Persians Wars (499-479 BC). The students appreciated the break from the classroom routine.
